Ralph Watkins, 85, of Effingham, formerly of Jasper County, Illinois passed away Monday, July 27, 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Crain Funeral Home, Newton. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 31, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery with military rites by the Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion.

Ralph was born November 7, 1923 in Newton the son of John R. and Velma (Beals) Watkins. He married Virginia Rose Walker December 24, 1949; she preceded him in death February 14, 1979. He married Mary Louise Quade in 1981 in Effingham; she preceded him in death December of 2006. Ralph served during WWII in the ETO. Attached to the Eighth Army Air Force, 321st Transport Squadron as an airplane mechanic and crew chief. Ralph was a Jasper County farmer. A member of the Falmouth United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and Lay Leader. He was a member of the Effingham-Jasper Gideon's. Ralph helped many children and youth have a more pleasant life and get more education. He worked on many church missions and Habitat for Humanity projects. Ralph was a maintenance man for a Care Home for the handicapped and retarded for twelve years and worked part-time at Martins IGA for four years. He enjoyed wood working having made toys, classical cars, tractors, vintage airplanes and clocks. Ralph always had a smile and a helping hand.

He will be loved and remembered by his brothers, John Watkins, Jr., of Ashton and Dean Watkins of Newton; sisters, Bette Mae (Dave) Crowley of Ashton, and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, wives Virginia and Mary, and brother Duane Watkins and sister-in-law Shirley Watkins.

In loving memory of Ralph, memorials may be made to Gideon's International.
