Mrs. Mary Catherine (Dhom) Bergbower, 93, of rural Newton, Illinois, passed away at 4:45 a.m., Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, IL.



Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, IL with Fr. Al Kemme celebrating mass. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, IL. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, January 17, 2011 at the church and also ½ before the mass. In loving memory of Mary, memorials may be made to the St. Thomas Church or School. Arrangements are under the care of the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL.

Mrs. Bergbower was born on July 22, 1917 in Jasper County, IL the daughter of Harry and Teresa (Schuch) Dhom. She married Thomas Bergbower on September 19, 1938; he preceded her in death on September 29, 1988. Mrs. Bergbower was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton and enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Bergbower is survived by seven children, Gary (Verna) Bergbower of Newton, Bob Bergbower of Mansfield, GA, Steve (Suzette) Bergbower of Snellville, GA, Carol Purcell of Teutopolis, Joan (Ronnie) Coleman of Brooks, GA, Sue (Pete) Blalock of Fayetteville, GA and Janice Ochs of Princeton, IN;  daughter-in-law, Teresa (Nosbich) Bergbower of Homer Glenn; two brothers, Bill (Ann) Dhom of Teutopolis and Jim (Geneva) Dhom of Newton; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bergbower was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Jim Bergbower, brothers Bob and Vic Dhom; sisters Marie Dhom, Joan Beverlin and Gertie Guerrettauz.
