10th Anniversary at The Cross

The Cross Foundation and The Cross at the Crossroads will host a free event on Sunday, September 11, in honor of its 10th anniversary. The event is scheduled from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on the grounds at the Cross, and the public is invited.

City Council Agenda

In New Business, they will Consider and Act on Purchase of 30 acres (Woods Addition); Entering into Agreement with Connor & Connor for Martin Street Approach Project; Ordinance No. 11-10 to Amend Section 3-1-3 Muzzling Dogs and Resolution No. 11-8 Concerning Homecoming Parade.

“Charity Motorcycle Run”

Ainad Shrine Riders will be having a “Charity Motorcycle Run”,  which is open to the public for the benefit of the Shriners Hospital for Children, on Saturday, September 17. Registration at 10:00 a.m. (entry fee $10.00 per person)-the ride begins at 11:00 a.m.
128 miles with the following stops: Hi-Benders Tavern-Ste. Marie, Vic's Cafe-Wendelin, One-Eleven Tavern-Clay City, American Legion-Louisville and Friday Nite Lites-Olney.

St. Mary's Picnic

One of the most popular annual events in Jasper County is the St. Mary's Pre-Labor Day Picnic in Sainte Marie.
The picnic has a long history. This year's picnic is believed to be the 174th annual celebration. The picnic this year will be held on Sunday, September 4th, 2011 with activities beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Porkburger Cookout

The Ambraw River Eagle's will be having a porkburger cookout on Saturday, August 27th benefitting the annual Marines Toys-For-Tots program. Serving will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Horseshoe Tournament at Hidalgo

The Jasper County Horseshoe Pitchers are hosting a 2nd Tournament on August 27th. The tournament will start at about 10:00 a.m. We are hoping for a little cooler weather this time. We encourage those who would like to watch the competition to come and bring chairs.

Zumba with Paige will be held at the KC Hall in Newton beginning August 29th. Monday evening @ 5:15 and Wednesday evening @ 5:30 p.m.

Olney Taekwondo Center Hosts Open House

Olney Taekwondo Center (OTC), located at 233 E. Main St., across from Arcadia Cinemas, will host an open house Saturday, Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to learn the many benefits of taekwondo training.

Guinness Record Breaking Event at The Cross

The Cross at the Crossroads will be trying to break a Guiness World Record of 935 people forming a human cross on September 11th at 1:00 p.m. at The Cross at the Crossroads in Effingham.

 

Organizers are hoping for 1,000 people at the September event. September 11 will also be the 10th anniversary of the lighting of The Cross.

 

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend and become a part of history.

Open Youth Air Rifle Match

The Fort LaMotte Rangers of Palestine, IL will be hosting an air rifle match for all area youth ages 8 to 19. The match will be held on September 10 at the Palestine City Park. The match begins at 8:30 a.m. Competitors must furnish air gun and ammunition. There will be 3 classes offered. Awards will be given and lunch will be served. There is a $2.00 registration fee.

5K Fun Run/Walk & 1 Mile Kids Run, Saturday, September 17, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the square in Newton.

Adult Book Club

The Newton Public Library Adult Book Club will meet on Thursday, August 25 at 4:45 p.m. They will be discussing the book, “My Antonia” by Willa Cather. The meeting will be held at the home of Judy Smith this month.

NCHS Girls Tennis

NCHS Girls Tennis Team will be having a mandatory Parents meeting Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the pavillion by the High School courts. Every girl planning to play on the tennis team this fall, along with a parent, must attend this meeting. Required signature forms will be available at this time. These forms, along with a current sports physical, must be submitted before the first practice Wednesday, August 10th at 8:00 a.m.
