Mary was born January 16, 1953 in Newton, Illinois to Loren and Georgiana Schackmann. Mary received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. She married Thomas J. Lueken of Teutopolis, Illinois on April 5, 1975. After marriage, they moved to Albion, Michigan. Mary spent her life shaping and mentoring the youth of Albion. She spent over two decades at Johnson Child Care and Development Center. Upon retirement, she spent 14 years as the cook and house mother at Delta Sigma Phi fraternity on the campus of Albion College. When asked to compare running a child care center to a fraternity house, Mary used to always smile and say, “Two year olds and twenty year olds are very similar, they just talk about different things!” After her diagnosis in 2014, Mary and Tom moved to Sharpsburg, GA to be closer to grandchildren and the Cancer Treatment Center of America.
Mary is survived by her husband, Thomas; daughters, Jessica (Brandon Young), Jennifer (Joseph Vocca) and Lindsay (Jermaine Nelson) and six grandchildren.
