The N.C.H.S. Yearbook staff was recently awarded 2nd place in competition for last year's yearbook (2008-2009). N.C.H.S. Yearbook staff was one of 28 schools that competed for this award of schools with less than 500 enrollment.
The following are the categories with placement: Best Copy Writing-2nd place, Best Sports Coverage-2nd place, Best Layout and Design-2nd place, Best Divider Pages-2nd place, Best Use of Photography-3rd place, Best Theme Development-3rd place and Best Coverage of School Year-1st place for an overall average of 2nd place.
Children auditions for the Newton Community High School production of "The Wizard of Oz" will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, in the high school auditorium. Registration will be in the West Hall. The auditions will be from 4:00-6:30 p.m.
Children should be no taller than 4'6" and at least in the first grade. Any Jasper County child who meets these criteria may audition. Audition information (with required song) may be picked up at any Jasper County school, including NCHS.
The Alert Now Rapid Communication Service is a program that allows the District to notify parents, students, and staff of emergency or weather related situations as well as other items of interest.
Jasper County Community Unit School District #1
Spring is here at last! We are in our final quarter of the school year and that means time begins to fly.
The Jasper County Soil & Water Conservation District is accepting applications for two scholarships.
Jasper County Community Unit #1 will conduct its annual Preschool Screening for 3 to 5 year old children from February 23-February 26. The screenings are offered at no cost to parents and help identify children who may need assistance before starting school. Screenings will be held at the First Baptist Church, 400 W. Washington St. in Newton.

The first day to file nominating petitions for the April 7, 2009 school board election is Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at the Board of Education Office at 609 S. Lafayette St., Newton.
The second meeting to organize Post Prom 2009 will be held in the NCHS library on Tuesday, January 20 at 6 p.m.
Rachel Frichtl of Newton, is the recipient of an academic scholarship to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale for the 2009 fall semester. Frichtl is receiving the Dean’s Scholarship Award, which is valued at $6,000. Scholarships are based on academic merit and potential for superior achievements in college.
Students at St. Thomas Grade School have been collecting items for the annual Jasper County Ministerial Association Food Drive.
Thanks to the quick actions of one Unit One Bus Driver a crisis concerning a young Jasper County student was averted. Several weeks ago Gloria Bradley, a bus driver for Jasper Unit One for over 26 years, took quick actions and assisted a young student on her bus who was in crisis.

In honor of the I.H.S.A. celebrating the 29th Annual National Activities Week the Newton Press-Mentor is recognizing this with articles relating to the celebration. Wednesday was designated as I.H.S.A. Youth Health Awareness Day.

With new uniforms, new percussion and a new trailer, the Newton Marching Eagles are preparing for the fall marching season in style.
The NCHS Marching Eagles will once again be selling Mum Corsages for Homecoming on October 3.
