Jasper County State's Attorney Kevin S. Parker stated, according to a press release, that William T. Johnson, 24, plead guilty and was sentenced August 26, 2010 to 5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in connection with two burglaries occurring in Jasper County.
According to court records, on or about August 5, 2010, a rural Jasper County man arrived home to find Johnson inside of his house. The homeowner was able to detain Johnson until police arrived. Johnson was then taken into custody without incident. Upon further investigation, Jasper County Sheriff Ed Francis learned that Johnson had stolen a duck call from inside the house and had attempted to hid it inside the sheriff's patrol car. At the same time, Sheriff Investigator Larry Reid was able to establish that Johnson had earlier the same day entered a nearby pickup truck taking a coon light hat and pair of hip waders. All stolen property was recovered and returned.
Burglary, a Class 2 felony in Illinois, carries with it a possible sentence of between 3 and 7 years in Department of Corrections. Parker explained that Johnson's agreed prison sentence includes a recommendation that he participate in a military-style boot camp known as "Impact Incarceration". If Johnson successfully completes the rigorous program of military formation and drill, labor and exercise lasting between 120-180 days, he would have the right to early discharge from prison. When not engaged in drills, labor or physical activity, program participants attend education and counseling activities. "The boot camp program, run by the Department of Corrections, is my idea of a last chance for someone to turn himself around," Parker commented. If nothing else, participants learn to say yes sir, no sir when they return to the community, added Parker.
Parker, complimented the work of the Jasper County Sheriff Ed Francis and Investigator Larry Reid for quickly bringing Johnson to justice.
