An area golf course that has been open for more than 55 years is scheduled to close at the end of this month.

The last day Stone's Throw Golf Course in Newton will be open is June 30.

General Manager Mickie Zada said Friday afternoon that the course is closing because of "substantial downturn" in business.

The former Laws Creek Golf Course opened in 1954. The old nine holes were closed at the beginning of the season.

"I'm forever optimistic," Zada said, adding that she distributed a newsletter recently to members that stated she "wears rose-colored glasses" and is hoping that "some miracle will happen."

She said she feels sorry for the 16 Newton Community High School students who are on the golf team. "Where are they going to play?" she said.

Although the course is closing, Zada said the clubhouse will remain open. It is a popular venue to hold parties, reunions, weddings and other events, she said.

There are Friday night dinners held at the clubhouse, which have been well received.

"The clubhouse holds its own," Zada said, adding that many events are booked through 2011.

Events can be booked by calling (618) 783-3790.
