Marjorie Gail Thomann

Marjorie Gail Thomann, 93, of Newman, formerly of Ingraham, IL passed away Friday, January 27, 2012 at Newman Healthcare, Newman, IL.

Funeral services will be today, Monday, January 30, 2012 at 12:00 noon at Ingraham Christian Church with Bro. Ron Payne officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. Marjorie was born on September 11, 1918 in Dieterich, IL, the daughter of Benjamin and Lola (Mullins) Woods, both deceased. She married Raymond L. Thomann on September 26, 1938; he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ingraham Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna Roberts of Heber Springs, Arkansas; four grandchildren; and Evelyn Gail (Donald) Crotts of Beggs, OK.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, one daughter Carolyn Swift, two sons-in-law, Gene Roberts and Richarf Swift; one brother Donald Eugene Woods and one sister.

Wayne Roberts

May 16, 1949 – January 28, 2012

Wayne Roberts, 62, of McLeansboro, Illinois passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2012 in his home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro, IL with Rev. Dale Hood officiating. Burial was in the Prospect Cemetery, McLeansboro, IL. Due to his lifelong love of books, memorial donations may be made to the Hamilton County Junior/Senior High School Media Center and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Wayne was born May 16,  1949 in Mattoon, IL, the son of Joe Q. and Lorene (Eggers) Roberts. He married Carole Sue Dewhirst on June 24, 1972 in Newton, IL. Wayne was a Conservation Police Officer for the State of Illinois, part-time officer with the McLeansboro Police Dept. He was a member of the Scott Ave. Christian Church, Newton, IL. Wayne was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard for six years. Wayne was also a member of the National Conservation Police Association, the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, Civil War History & loved collecting Indian artifacts. He was a member of the McLeansboro Elks Lodge #1882 and the Walpole Tuscan Masonic Lodge. He retired in 2002. Wayne loved Southern Illinois and the wonderful friendships he found here. Above all, his favorite pastime was just being “GRAMPS”.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Roberts of McLeansboro; parents, Joe and Lorene Roberts of Newton; one daughter, Stephanie (Bill) Gray of Evansville, IN; two granddaughters, Hunter Phelps and Kelcy Gray; two brothers, Jeff Roberts of Newton and Kevin (Patti) Roberts of Rocky Face, Georgia; three nephews, Brock (Shelly) Roberts and their sons, Kaden and Kallen of Georgia, Brandon (Natalie) Roberts and their sons, Ryker and Nash of Georgia and Zachary (Brittany) Roberts and their daughter, Hadley, of Georgia; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one son, Matthew Roberts.

Mr. George Norbert Sheridan

Mr. George Norbert Sheridan, 88, of  rural West Liberty, IL passed away at 1:17 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2012 at his home.                                                 

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2012 at the St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Ste. Marie, IL with Fr. George Norbert was born on February 22, 1923 in Jasper County, IL the son of Andrew and Anne (Spitzer) Sheridan.  He married Melba Rose Menke on October 26, 1946; she preceded him in death on July 15, 1986.  He later married Mary Bailey on April 27, 1991; she survives. Norbert was a lifelong farmer and a lifelong member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Ste. Marie.  He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1704; Olney Elks; Jasper County Farm Bureau and a member of the Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District.  He had served on the Ste. Marie School Board; Ste. Marie Levee District and St. Mary's Parrish Council. Norbert enjoyed woodworking, mowing, gardening, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family especially the grandchildren.
                                                                                                                                                                       Norbert is survived by his wife of 20 years, Mary Sheridan of West Liberty; one daughter, Janeth (Mark) Hartrich of Newton; three grandchildren, Kristie (Chad) Cunningham of Navarre, FL; Brian Hartrich of Newton and Craig (Amy) Hartrich of Newton; two great-grandchildren, Reid and Cecelia Cunningham; three step-children, Lisa (Ben) Weiler of Claremont, Mary Anne (Chad) Wissel of Albion and Monte Scranton of Owensboro, KY; nine step-grandchildren, Megan (Patrick) Connely of St. Louis, MO, Michelle Weiler of Olney, Rachel (Josh) Payne of Olney, Ashley Marks of Albion, Bailey Wissel of Albion, Hannah Wissel of Albion, Sgt. Monty (Tasha) Scranton of Oak Grove, KY, Rebecca (Chris) Armstrong of Utica, KY and D. Riley (Joy) Scranton of Owensboro, KY; eight step, great-grandchildren and two sisters, Dorothy (Leland) Woods of Newton and LaVaun Nix of West Liberty.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Melba Rose Sheridan, half sister Geneva Swortfiger and 2 half brother Lorraine and Leonard Sheridan.  He will dearly be missed by his  family and friends.

Madonna was born on December 24, 1921 in Jasper County, IL the daughter of Guy F. and Anna (Vanderhoof) Kinsel.  She married Gilbert O. Bigard on May 20, 1940 and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1992. Madonna was a homemaker and loving mother.  She was a member of St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton.  She enjoyed gardening and was a great cook.

Madonna is survived by four sons, Larry (Janice) Bigard of Newton, Gerald Bigard of Newton, David (Lori) Bigard of Kansas City, MO and Joe (Maria) Bigard of Newton; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild.

Mr. George Raymond Shire, 84, of Marion, Ky passed away Sunday afternoon at Crittenden County Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Shire grew up in Willow Hill, IL. He worked as a millwright at American Bridge for 25 years from 1957 until they closed.  He then transferred to United States Steel where he worked until he retired in 1984.  Mr. Shire was a member of Unity General Baptist Church in Crayne, KY.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lola Mae Shire of Marion; three daughters, Glenda (Mike) Dragovich of Seminole, FL, Brenda (John) Clemmons of Hobart, IN, and Jeanie Shire of Marion, KY; eleven grandchildren, Mike Sakon, Jennifer Dragovich, Christina Dragovich, John Clemmons, Wade Clemmons, Mike Clemmons, Joe Clemmons, Kortni Clemmons, Jason Mathieu, Jessie Mathieu, and Jon Mathieu; five great grandchildren, Nicholas Fisher, Katie Mathieu, Hailey Mathieu Laryssa Pogue and Taylor Graw.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Shire; a grandchild, Ed Sakon; a brother, Donald Shire, and his parents, Ralph and Laura Funkhouser Shire.

James O. Smith

James was born on September 15, 1941 in Bogota, IL the son of Kenneth C. and Mildred (Grove) Smith.  James married Betty Russell on January 3, 1994 and she survives.  James worked at the Robinson Pottery, worked with his brother trucking for 15 years at Bekin's Trucking and retired from the Jasper County Country Club.  James enjoyed camping, spending time with his children and grandchildren, watching John Wayne Movies and listening to country music “when it was country music”.

James is survived by his wife of 18 years, Betty Smith of Newton; his children, Roy (Lori) Cavazos of Palestine, Danny (Billie) Cavazos of Hidalgo, Teresa (Nick) DiBeasi of Willow Hill, Kevin (Debbie) Smith of  Landes and Cyndi Goss (Bryan Bower) of Wheeler and faithful companion, dog, Tubby; siblings, Bonnie (Lawrence) Sparks of Newton, Linda Lingafelter of Willow Hill, Kenneth (Carol) Smith of Naples, FL; Paulette (Dennis) Ebeling of Newton and Crissie (Terry) Park of Salem and fourteen grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his parents, baby sister Brenda Sue Smith and Brother in law Larry Lingafelter.

Michael Ray Wilson

August 2, 1949 – January 16, 2012

Michael Ray Wilson, 62, of Willow Hill, IL passed away at 6:45 a.m., Monday, January 16, 2012 at Newton Rest Haven in Newton, IL.

Michael was born on August 2, 1949 in Centralia, IL the son of Floyd Ray and Irmalyn (Bridges) Wilson.  Shortly after Mike was born his mother Irmalyn passed away from polio.  Michael was a deaf mute from the polio his mother had while she was pregnant with him.  After the passing of his mother Floyd married Shirley Faye Wilson and Shirley raised Mike as her own son.                                                                                                                                                Michael worked over 14 years at Newton Broom Factory.  He enjoyed mowing, watching John Wayne and the Three Stooges on TV.

Michael is survived by four brothers, Paul D. (Lori)  Wilson of Holiday Hills, Tubie J. (Pattie) Wilson of  Windsor, SC; Steven S. Wilson of Willow Hill, Todd W. (Christina) Wilson of Olney; sister, Lori Kay (Richad) Wilson of Willow Hill.                                                                 

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, sister Peggy L. Wilson; brother Jeffrey Ray Wilson; cousins Geanie Marie Wilson and Cody Buck Wilson and several aunts and uncles.  Michael was loved and will be missed by his family and anyone who knew him.  He is gone, but will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

Ralph Dean Brooks was born on July 24, 1933 in Jasper County, IL the son of Victor and Beulah (Cox) Brooks.  
Ralph was a 1953 graduate of Newton Community High School where he played football and ran track.
He served in the United States Army.  He worked at United Technologies Automotive and as a night watchman at Norris Electric. Ralph enjoyed the outdoors, mushroom hunting and gardening.

Ralph is survived by two daughters, Deania (Tony) Trimble of Newton and Doris Facer of Paris; one son, Dennis (Charla) Brooks of Newton; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Connie) Brooks of Newton; two sisters, Sharon (Don) Gerber of Champaign and Wanda Brackett of Tuscon, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Clarrean Brooks of Newton and Maxine Brooks of Flora.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers- Herbert, Richard, Kenneth and Harold; two sisters- Betty Brooks and Patricia Hippler.

Arthur Glenard Hepner

Arthur Glenard Hepner, 69, stepped into heaven after a long battle with lung cancer at 2:55 p.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012, with his loving wife, Nancy, at his side.
 
A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 22, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hazel Dell Church of Christ. Interment will be held with full military honors at the Hazel Dell Cemetery. Art was born and raised in and around Flat Rock.  He graduated in 1960 from Newton Community High School, where he loved playing basketball.  Following graduation, he joined the United States Air Force.  Art served his country for 23 year before retiring in 1983.  His service included tours in Vietnam, as well as Iceland, Korea and England.  He also served at numerous bases stateside, including Langley AFB, Hurlburt Field AFB, Tyndall AFB, Chanute AFB, Scott AFB, and two favorite opportunities at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX where he served as a Drill Sergeant and in Blytheville, AR where he served as First Sergeant for the EMS squadron.
Art touched countless lives through his patriotism and leadership during his tenure in the service and was dedicated to each command and mission.

During his military career, he attended the USAF First Sergeant Academy, the ATC oncommissioned Officer Academy, OJT Training and Military Instructor Training Courses.  He was well-decorated and was honored to receive the following personal awards: Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Force Achievement Medal. In addition, MSgt Hepner (retired) received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2 clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 clusters, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with 2 clusters, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Overseas Service Ribbon, Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Military Education Ribbon, and Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with 4 clusters.

Upon retirement, Art attended Lakeland Community College and received an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts.  Following college, he continued to serve the military community as a Veteran’s Affairs Representative, as a Disabled American Veteran’s Representative, and as an Illinois AMVETS Officer.  He also managed a successful Goodwill Industries store in Maryland.  
An avid fisherman, Art loved to spend quiet time on the water as well as countless hours in the kitchen cooking up something delicious for his loved ones.  Art was a member of the Hazel Dell Church of Christ.
 
One day, he will be reunited with his surviving loved ones, including his high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years, Nancy (Ruffner) Hepner of Jacksonville, Florida, his daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Paul Loesche, and two beloved grandchildren, Jacob and Jessica Loesche all of Chesapeake, Virginia; brothers and sisters, Donald of Flat Rock, Cleo Lawson of Flat Rock, Robert of Valpariso, Indiana, Jerry of Martinsville and Ann Sanger of Martinsville; brothers and sisters in-law Earl and Marie Ruffner of Wisconsin, Marilyn and Gary Wattleworth of Yale, Jack and Norma Ruffner of Yale, and Annetta and Doug Chronic of Largo, Florida, Bobby K .and Gail Green of Hidalgo, IL and Ilah (Green) and Pat Walsh of St. Simon’s Island, GA; and extended family including nieces, nephews and dear friends will greatly miss him.
 
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Pauline Hepner, his stepmother, Della Hepner, one brother, Harry Hepner, one sister, Dixie (Hepner) Best, his mother and fathers-in-law, Freda (Spencer) (Ruffner) Green, William Ruffner and Robert Green, one sister-in-law Cathy Hepner, as well as two nephews, Cody Chronic and Jon Ruffner.

Brenda was born on May 5, 1948 in Olney, IL the daughter of Clinton and Mary (Wells) Williams.  She married John Auteberry, Jr. on April 17, 1965; he survives. Brenda worked at Newton Rest Haven for 17 years and Burgin Manor for 14 years as Nurse's Aide. Brenda attended the Free Methodist Church in Newton and was a member of the Olney Eagles.  She enjoyed going to horses races.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 46 years, John Auteberry, Jr. of Newton; her children, Sherry (Danny) Auteberry Harren of Olney, Deana Auteberry Franz of Newton, Diana (Scott) Billingsley of Olney, Denise Auteberry of Newton and John “J.C.” Auteberry of Newton; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lana (Martin) Janicke, Robert (Linda) Amos, Charles Powell Byers, Rose Rodgers, Debbie Powell, Sharon Powell and Karen Powell.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and has also worked as a police officer in Robinson, IL and as a corrections officer in Joliet, IL. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Doiletta "Dot" Collins of Noble; son, Ronald (Champ) Collins and wife Saundra of Noble; Daughter, Rheta Earp and husband Stephen of Noble; Daughter, Rachel Cook and husband Nathan of Flora, IL; Son-in-law, Marty Miller of Noble; Mother-in-law, Rheta Tarr of Olney; Uncle, John Hamilton of Olney; Sisters, Ruth Warosh of Denver, CO and Susan Willis of Clarksville, TN; Sisters-in-law, Pamela Adams, Elsie Cooley and Robin Billberry; Brother-in-law, Rodney Tarr; Grandsons, Coty Collins, James Bailey and Ronald Collins II; Stepgrandchildren, Aaron, Devon, Nathan, Melinda and Dakota and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Marie Anna Deimel, 93, formerly of Newton, Illinois passed away at 1:30 a.m., Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL ad joined her beloved husband Leo and her many friends and family members who had gone on before.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, IL with Fr. Mike Haag celebrating mass.  Burial will be in the Mt. Marie was born May 13, 1918 in Jasper County.  She was the daughter of Ellis and Ethel (Carter) Woods. Marie worked in a watch factory/turned airplane factory in Elgin, IL during World War II.  She returned home to Jasper County and married Leo Deimel on December 2, 1943.  She and Leo owned and operated their farm southwest of Bogota for over 30 years before selling the farm and moving to Newton.  Marie began working as a certified nurse’s aide at Newton Rest Haven Nursing Home in 1967.  She retired from Newton Rest Haven after 18 years of providing loving care to the residents.  She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic church and served on various committees.  She also belonged to the Women of the Moose and the Eagles. Quilting, gardening, canning and growing flowers were among her many interests.  Marie seldom sat down without a crochet hook and thread in her hands.  She won prizes at the Jasper County Fair with her crocheted entries.  She donated her hand crafted items to St. Thomas Church for their fund raising events as well as giving many beautiful doilies, tablecloths, baby items and other projects as gifts to friends and family.  Due to declining health, Marie moved to Springfield, IL in March 2002 to live with her niece/foster daughter, Sharon Goretzke and Sharon’s husband Raoul.  She spent her final years surrounded by the love of her family.
Although Leo and Marie had no children of their own, they provided much love and support to their many nieces and nephews over the years.  In May of 1959, they welcomed their niece Sharon “Sherrie” Rogers into their home as a foster daughter.

Her husband Leo preceded Marie in death on November 14, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Dorothy Schammerhorn, Frankie Merreighn and Freda Cornwell.  She is survived by her foster daughter, Sharon Goretzke, and several nieces and nephews.  She will be sadly missed and will continue to live on in our hearts forever.

Albert Wilson

August 13, 1928 – January 11, 2012

Albert Wilson, 83, of Willow Hill, Illinois passed away at 12:31 a.m., Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Richard L. Roudebush V.A. Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN.   

Graveside military rites will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Shiloh Cemetery in rural Willow Hill, IL.  Arrangements are under the care of the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.blakefh.com.

Albert was born on August 13, 1928 in Jasper County, IL the son of Sam and Frona (Chapman) Wilson.  He married Rosella Gosnell Britton in 1967; she preceded him in death on August 8, 2005. Albert was a mechanic and had worked in the oil field. Albert served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 till 1950.  He was a member of the AmVets.

Albert is survived by one son, Robert Lee Britton of Olney; two daughters, Barbara Durden of Sigel and Judy (Keith) Colclasure of Ingraham; one brother, Tom Wilson of Newton; one sister, Rosemary Dulgar of Rockford, IL; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Jackie Lee Britton; daughter Elaine Jackson; Grandson Kenneth Randall Jones and several brothers and sisters.
