Regional baseball from Monday involving Fieldcrest, WFC and Dwight
Derek May tossed a two-hit shutout as Fieldcrest advanced in Class 2A regional baseball with a 10-0 win over Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell Monday afternoon.
The win moves the Knights into the semifinals opposite Eureka at the Eureka Regional Wednesday.
May needed just 53 pitches over five innings to chalk up the shut out. He struck out four and did not allow a walk.
Lost in this was the one bad inning WFC’s Collin Hjerpe had in the game. Hjerpe allowed eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, which ended the game. Hjerpe allowed seven hits and walked four to go with three punchouts. All eight runs in the fifth were unearned.
Hayden Carls opened the fifth inning for Fieldcrest with a base hit. A walk to Michael Morse followed and then two WFC errors became a factor. The second allowed Carls to score and groundout let Morse come home.
A fielder’s choice made it 5-0 as the unearned runs were piling up. Another error a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Zack Moritz, who doubled to clear the bases. Morse doubled two batters later to end the game.
Morse scored the Knights’ first run in the first inning on a Matt Cook single. Fieldcrest made it 2-0 in the second when Noah Nordstrom, who had led off with a double, scored on a Travis Cook single.
Moritz doubled and three runs batted in for the Knights. Morse and Nordstrom each had a double and RBI and May had a two-base hit. Matt Cook had a a hit and two RBIs, Travis Cook had a run-scoring single while Carls also singled. Ryan Naas and McKoy Allen each drove in a run.
Hjerpe and Mason Ewing each singled for the Warriors.
GSW 11, Dwight 10
GARDNER — Dwight came close to moving on but the Trojans dropped an 11-10 decision to rival Gardner-South Wilmington in a 10-inning Class 1A Marquette Regional contest.
The Panthers won the game in the 10th on a bases-loaded single.
DTHS had a chance to score ion the ninth inning with two on and two outs. The Trojans also had a runner on in the eighth frame.
Dwight tied it at 10-10 in the sixth inning. Mason Tjelle led off with a single and Cole Hahn followed with a double to drive Tjelle in with the equalizer.
GSW took a 9-1 lead after two innings but the Trojans fought back with five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to tie it 9-9 for a moment. GSW took a 10-9 lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Hayden Tjelle had three hits, including two doubles, for the Trojans. He also drove in four runs. Half of Dwight’s base hits were doubles as Bubba Schultz, Logan Graham, Carson Crouch and Hahn each had a two-bagger. Hahn also added a single while Cade Enerson and Mason Tjelle each had two singles. Colton Holm drove in two runs while Hahn, Schultz and Graham had one RBI apiece.
Michael Johnson took the loss after giving up a run, a hit and two walks in his 1 1-3 innings. He fanned two. Hayden Tjelle started, allowing six runs in 1-plus inning. He gave up six hits and struck out one. Graham allowed four runs on six hits and five walks while striking out nine.
