State track meet for Class 1A girls

    Cate Atkins of El Paso-Gridley and the Ridgeview 4x200 relay team have advanced to the state finals after competing in the Class 1A girls’ state track preliminaries Thursday afternoon at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Field.
    Atkins will have a busy Saturday after placing sixth in her heat of the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 27.95 seconds. It was good enough to make the finals with 11 other competitors.
    Atkins will also be competing in the 3,200 run on Saturday with teammate Sophia Allen. The 3,200 run does not have a preliminary race.
    Ridgeview’s 4x200 relay team of Mya Tinsley, Camryn Winterland, Stacia Landry and Jules Grunloh took second in its heat at 1:46.91. This was good to make the final field of nine teams.
    The Mustangs also competed in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays but did not advance. The 4x100 quartet of Tinsley, Landry and Grunloh was joined by Tia Hardt and finished at 51.07 seconds. The 4x400 foursome of Grunloh, Jayden Standish, Hardt and Landry came in at 4:17.24.
    EPG also had two relay teams competing, but did not advance. The Titans’ Makenna Parkhouse, Aubrey Staton, Faith Graham and Tristyn Grube finished at 52.47 seconds in the 4x100. Grube, Emma Betts, Sophia Lowery and Parkhouse came in at 4:18.2 in the 4x400.
    Individually, Tinsley competed in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 13.109 seconds. She clocked a 27.18-second run in the 200.
    Graham, a freshman at EPG, had a time of 16.4 in the 100-meter hurdles event.Dwight’s Julie Ramsey, running in a different heat, finished at 16.58 seconds in the 100 hurdles.
    EPG’s Parkhouse had a time of 48.63 seconds in the 300 hurdles event.
    In the field, the Titans had Grube competing in the long jump, finishing with a best leap of 15 feet, 5 inches. Staton cleared 4-11 in the high jump.
    Ridgeview’s Standish had a toss of 106-7 in the discus.
    The Class 2A preliminaries will take place today with Pontiac being represented by Sarah Christopher in three events. The senior will run the 100 meters, the 400 meters and team with freshmen Tristina Einhaus and Franchesca Smith and junior Megan Leigh in the 4x400.
