Eagles win Apollo finale
By TERRY LIDY
The Eagles used the long ball last Saturday and clutch pitching by Jared Woodard and Zak Snearley to sweep the Paris Tigers 6-5 and 8-3 at chilly and windy Boys and Girls Park.
Newton banged out eight hits off Devin Nelbarger and Ethan Mason in the opener including two run shots by Connor Walters in the first and Mark Mammoser in the second to build a 6-2 cushion after three innings. Paris rallied with three in the sixth off winner Jared Woodard. However, Zak Snearley saved the game for Woodard and the Eagles with a scoreless seventh fanning two Tigers. Woodard allowed eight hits over six innings with four walks and six strikeouts.
Besides the homers, Jared Woodard was 3 for 3 at the plate, while Kelby McCoy was 2 for 3. James Lidy had the other Eagle basehit.
In the nightcap, the Eagles again used the long ball as Mark Mammoser connected twice including a decisive three run tater in the sixth when the Eagles scored five times to break a 3-3 tie. Earlier Mammoser connected on a solo blast and Jared Woodard also went deep as the Eagles took a 3-2 edge into the fourth inning.
Paris scored twice in the first on Zak Snearley and tied it up in the fourth. However, Snearley blanked the Tigers over the final three innings in a gutty 98 pitch performance on a cold day. Snearley allowed eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Eagles banged out nine hits led by Mark Mammoser, Jared Woodard and Kelby McCoy each with two. Mammoser drove in four, while Woodard had two RBIs. Connor Walters and Alex Frohning each had RBI singles. A.J. Hyatt also singled for the Eagles who finished 4-10 in the Apollo and improved to 16-14 overall.
The Eagles primed for the doubleheader with an 11-7 win over visiting South Central last Thursday. The Cougars came in with a potent attack and proved it by banging out 10 hits off winning pitcher Marc Brandenburg and reliever Zak Snearley. However, the Eagles built a 9-1 cushion before the Cougars rallied.
The Eagles also had their hitting clothes on with 11 base hits. Scott Jansen was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Connor Walters was 2 for 4 including a homer with three RBIs.
Kelby McCoy and Jared Woodard each had two hits. McCoy drove in a run as did Woodard who scored three times. Alex Frohning and Mark Mammoser each added singles. Austin Blair and A.J. Hyatt also contributed each with a run batted in off losing pitcher Tyler Gillett.
Zak Snearley got the save pitching the seventh allowing three hits and three runs. Marc Brandenburg was the winner allowing seven hits over six innings with four runs. Brandenburg walked one and fanned three Cougars in throwing 82 pitches.
South Central showed their power over the weekend pounding Carmi 21-9 and 21-5 with 33 hits. So, the Eagle win last Thursday was another quality victory.
