The NCHS Lady Eagles kick off their 2009-10 season this Thursday with a 6:15 game against St. Anthony at the NCHS gym.
Coach Katie Lurkins has three seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen on the squad of twelve players. With the lack of numbers, the Lady Eagles will play only varsity games starting at 6:15.
Seniors returning are guard Lucy Emmerich, forward Joni Hahn and forward Tori Wagy to provide leadership among the upper classmen. Also returning are juniors Brianna Nail and Mallory Kocher who divided their time last year between varsity and junior varsity play.
Emmerich, Hahn and Kocher have the most varsity experience as the Lady Eagles turned in a 11-16 season last year.
The rest of the squad will be made up of sophomores and freshmen. "We have lots of energy and enthusiasm from our younger players. Sophomore Amy Koebele returns as a starter at the forward position and Terra Flowers will help out at point guard," said Lurkins.
Five freshmen will be added to the mix after a successful junior high career. Those contending for a starting berth are Morgan Bergbower, Amy Bierman, Megan Jansen, Carly Niebrugge and Morgan Swingler. "The freshmen will have to step up and continue to improve if we are to be successful. The girls have been working extremely hard in practice as we look forward to the upcoming season," added Lurkins.
