Ross Wolf, a 2001 graduate of Newton Community High School had a lifelong dream fulfilled when he was traded to the Oakland A's for Jake Fox on June 22. Wolf was promoted to the major leagues on July 7 wearing #50.
The 6', 180 lb. right-handed pitcher began his illustrious career in high school. As a senior Wolf was a member of the NCHS 35-4 State Championship team under Coach Steve Schulte. He was named to the MVP team as well as All-Apollo Conference and Decatur Herald & Review Player of the Year honors. He received a scholarship to Wabash Valley College and played one season NJCAA Division I baseball.
Wolf was selected by the Montreal Expos in the 47th round (1390th overall) in the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft, but he chose not to sign with them. In 2002 he was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 18th round (533rd overall). On August 9, 2007, Wolf had his contract purchased by the big league club. He had a 2.82 ERA in 41 relief appearances for the Marlin Triple-A affiliate, the Albuquerque Isotopes. At the end of the 2008 season Wolf was a free agent and signed with the Baltimore Orioles. He was traded to Oakland A's from Baltimore.
Ross was on the A's Opening Day roster and was 1-4 with a 5.49 ERA in 26 games, including two starts. He had appeared in just two of the A's last 12 games.
Wolf, 27, is the son of Gary and Terri Wolf of Dieterich.
