4th Annual Golf Outing

The Jasper County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor their 4th Annual Golf Outing on Saturday, June 19 at Stone's Throw Golf Course. This 18 hole 4 person scramble is open to the public. Shot gun start at 8:30 a.m. There is a cost to participate per person.

Payout is based on number of entries the day of the event. There will be proximity contests such as Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, Longest Putt, FUNd Raising Games and much more. Lunch of porkburgers and water will be provided by the Chamber of Commerce Board for a donation.

The Chamber's new Executive Director, Milissa Weber, told us "I am really excited about this year's Chamber golf event for lots of reasons, not the least of which is that I've never been to a golf tournament! I'm looking forward to a fun day of promoting the Chamber and making sure every participant has a wonderful time!"

Commenting about last year's event, Steve Chapman said, "I had a lot of fun playing with my buddies, and won a couple of nice prizes!" Brett and Amanda Lessley commented, "We had a great time. We especially liked all the extra contests like longest drive and closest to the pin. It's fun playing in the Chamber golf tournament...we enjoy seeing our friends and neighbors out on the course, too! And, the porkburgers were great...Kevin Parker cooked them just right!"

Stone's Throw Golf Course and Banquet facility is a proud member of the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. They are located west of Newton at 8817 N. 800th Street. Stone's Throw is a public golf course and is open to anyone wishing to use its services. They are looking forward to helping the Chamber have another great event. Olney Sweeps Newton

In a makeup doubleheader postponed from last Saturday, the NCHS Eagles fell to 2-10 in the Apollo as the Olney Tigers won both games Tuesday at Boys & Girls Park 6-2 in the opener and 11-8 in the nightcap.

Brandon Bailey outdueled Jared Woodard in the opener. Woodard allowed only six hits, while Bailey permitted seven. The big difference in the game was Bailey's five RBI's in helping himself at the plate. Bailey cracked two homers.

Meanwhile, the Eagles got two hits from Alex Frohning and Jared Woodard along with a single by Mark Mammoser to pace the attack.

In the second Apollo contest, a slugfest resulted as Olney held off the Eagles 11-8 as Bailey again got the pitching win over Zak Snearley.

Kelby McCoy and Mark Mammoser each went 2 for 4 for the Eagles. McCoy doubled and Mammoser homered. Peyton Wyatt also doubled for the Eagles.

In non-conference action on Monday, the Eagles fell at Neoga 7-6 as the Indians scored the winning run in the seventh after the Eagles rallied to tie at 6 with a two run seventh.

Mark Mammoser belted a three run homer for Newton, while Kelby McCoy drilled a solo shot. A.J. Hyatt added two singles and drove in two. Peyton Wyatt, Scott Jansen and Jared Woodard each singled off Jacob Massengill. Marc Brandenburg took the loss for the Eagles allowing 11 hits with five walks and ten strikeouts. The Eagles 13-14 for the year next host South Central and Paris.


Lady Eagles smack Lady Tigers

The NCHS Lady Eagles moved closer to another Apollo title with a double dip victory over the host Olney Lady Tigers Tuesday 6-0 and 10-7. The victories allowed the Lady Eagles to maintain their two game Apollo lead over Charleston heading into the final week of Apollo action. The Lady Eagles improved to 11-1 in the Apollo while Charleston remained two games back at 9-3 after disposing of Paris on Tuesday 10-0 and 13-1.

In the opener, Amber Shedelbower was on her game as the Wabash Valley bound righthander spun a nifty three hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks. Shedelbower also clubbed a homer and drove in three. Whitney Koebele also had a big game going 3 for 4 with three runs driven in. Lauren Gray added with a 2 for 4 game as Newton banged out 11 hits off Elizabeth Walker.

In the nightcap, Keidrah Hardiek won over Mallory Rusk. Hardiek allowed five hits over five innings with seven strikeouts. Amber Shedelbower again was a force with a 4 for 4 performance. Whitney Koebele socked a double and a triple as the Lady Eagles bounced back from a lackluster performance on Monday at Cumberland.

The Monday contest at Toledo saw the Lady Eagles belted by the Lady Pirates 10-1 as Shana Marti bested Amber Shedelbower. Leading 1-0 going into the fourth, Cumberland broke the game open with a three spot. They added two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

The Lady Eagles averted a shutout scoring their lone tally in the sixth off Marti.

The Lady Eagles next finish their Apollo schedule hosting Paris this Saturday at Boys & Girls Park in an 11:00 a.m. twinbill.


Mattoon wins Eagle Invite

Mattoon won the annual Eagle Invitational boys' track meet last Friday at Chizevsky Field scoring 119 points to out distance 14 schools. The Eagles finished 11th with 22 points.

Ross Johnson won the 200 meter dash in 23.12 sec. and was third in the 100 in 11.159 sec. Ridge Finn was third in the 200 in 23.61 sec.

Following Mattoon's 119 points were Shelbyville 103, Charleston 83, Robinson 39, Casey-Westfield 37.66, Fairfield 37, Teutopolis 36.33, Effingham 36, St. Anthony 29, Olney 28, Newton 22, and Lawrenceville 22, Red Hill 10, Pana and Cowden-Herrick 6.

One new meet record was set as Charleston won the 800 F/S relay in 1:34.56 min.


Lady Eagles second at own invite

The NCHS Lady Eagles track team placed second in the annual Newton Invitational held Monday at Chizevsky Field. Mattoon won with 83 points. Newton had 70, Neoga 63, Effingham 55, Red Hill 33.50, Casey-Westfield 20, Olney 16, Robinson 12, Lawrenceville 10.50, Flora 6.

Maura Cummins won the high jump at 5-5 and was third in the 400 in 1:04.10. Lisa Frichtl was fourth in 1:06.72. Carly Niebrugge was fifth in the 800 in 2:36.00. Calla Niebrugge was fourth in the long jump at 14-1. Tara Wirth was second in the shot at 31-0 and discus at 87-5.

The 400 relay team of Megan Jansen, Jackie Michl, Calla Niebrugge and Maura Cummins were second in 54.09 sec. The 800 relay team was also second in 1:57.52 min.


Tennis Eagles fall

In non-conference boys' tennis last Thursday, the NCHS Eagles dropped a 4-1 decision to visiting Mt. Carmel. The Golden Aces won two of three singles matches and both doubles to seal the win. The Eagle point came when #3 Logan Andrews defeated Drew Smith 6-1, 6-0. #1 Caleb Will fell 1-6, 3-6 to Matt Buck. #2 Jerry Howze dropped a 2-6, 2-6 match to John Schroeder.

In doubles play, Dakota Birch and Jesse Renfroe fell 3-6, 4-6 to Chase Bramlet and Kyle Wood. Matt Shryock and Eric LeMay dropped a 1-6, 1-6 verdict to David Schroeder and Davis Vargo.

In exhibition action, Matthias Ochs won over Chase Savage of Mt. Carmel 6-1, 4-2.
