Lady Eagles win regional

By TERRY LIDY

After winning 102 games in four years at the helm and four straight Apollo crowns, Sara Beam and her Lady Eagles were after the elusive regional title against the Casey-Westfield Lady Warriors. Defeating C-W 6-1 on Senior Day last week, the Lady Eagles were confident that this was to be their day on Saturday at the Robinson 2A Regional.

"We came out fired up after scoring in the first. Once you get our team fired up, we can keep going with hits," commented Sara Beam. "We haven't been playing very well all season, and I think our six seniors decided to pick it up."

Lauren Gray led the offense going 2 for 4 with two batted in. Amber Shedelbower also helped herself with two hits. Kimberlin Wallace added a hit and scored twice. Shedelbower permitted only two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Lady Eagles reached the title game with a 5-4 victory over the Marshall Lady Lions as Amber Shedelbower got the win. Mallory Kocher was the hitting star for Newton with a homer and double driving in three.

The Lady Eagles will carry a 24-6 record into the Flora 2A Sectional on Thursday versus St. Anthony, a 6-1 10 inning winner over Pana in the Pana Regional title game. St. Anthony, who won their first regional crown ever, will carry a 29-9 record into the contest. These two schools squared off in state competition last fall in 2A sectional volleyball action with St. Anthony winning.

Eagles edged in regional action

After clubbing Lawrenceville 12-1 in the opening round of the 2A Robinson Regional last Monday, the NCHS Eagles had their season end abruptly last Wednesday by the #1 seed Flora Wolves 2-1 in a pitching duel. Marc Brandenburg was the tough luck losing pitcher allowing only four hits. Flora scored both runs in the second and held on as the Eagles rallied to score in the sixth off Bryton Krutsinger. However, Paul Knapp pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save in the light hitting contest. The Eagles collected only four hits themselves as the top of the lineup did all the damage. A.J. Hyatt, the lead off man, had a double. Scott Jansen, hitting second, had two hits including a double and scored the sixth inning run. Kelby McCoy, batting third, had the other Eagle hit as the Eagles finished 19-16 for the season. Senior Marc Brandenburg was effective in needing only 82 pitches to hold the powerful Wolves.
