Eagles divide non-conference games

By TERRY LIDY

In non-conference baseball last week, the Eagles split games with Marshall and Flora from the Little Illini Conference. On Monday, the Eagles disposed of the Marshall Lions at Boys and Girls Park 7-2 as Marc Brandenburg tossed a four hitter against the 14-1 Lions. Brandenburg threw 125 pitches in going the distance with three walks and seven strikeouts.

The Eagles took the lead early as Peyton Wyatt walked, advanced on a ground out by Scott Jansen and scored on a single up the middle by Kelby McCoy. Marshall tied it in the third, but the Eagles forged ahead with a two-run fourth. After Marshall made it 3-2 with a fifth inning tally, the Eagles put up a crooked four spot in the sixth to help seal the victory, the Eagles' 13th of the season.

The Eagles had seven hits in the contest and were aided by six Marshall errors. Jordan Grooms and Ryan Hefner pitched for Marshall. A.J. Hyatt and Kelby McCoy led the offense with two singles each. McCoy drove in a pair of Eagles, while Peyton Wyatt and Jared Woodard also had two RBIs.

Woodard clubbed a two run homer and scored twice. Peyton Wyatt and Alex Frohning also scored twice. Mark Mammoser scored the other Newton run. Scott Jansen added an RBI single in the team victory. "Basically, we have played pretty well and have had some good moments. We still need more pitching down the stretch," said Eagle Coach Jason Fulton. The Eagles improved to 13-7 for the season, while Marshall fell to 14-2.

Last Tuesday, the Eagles invaded Flora and were roughed up by the Wolves 15-3 in a 5-inning contest. Flora scored in every inning off Zak Snearley and Dylan Casey. Snearley allowed 10 hits and 12 runs in two innings of pitching. Casey permitted 4 hits and 3 runs in two innings as the Wolves banged out 14 hits.

After trailing 1-0, the Eagles scored twice in the second to take a slim 2-1 edge. However, it didn't last long as Flora scored six in the second and five more in the third. The Wolves used the long ball as they belted four homers.

The Eagles had seven hits off Nick Painter with Scott Jansen leading with a 3 for 3 day. Jared Woodard added an RBI triple, while Alex Frohning, Mark Mammoser and A.J. Hyatt had singles for the 13-8 Eagles.
