Eagles win big over T-Town

In non-conference play last week, the Eagles of Coach Jason Fulton opened the week dropping a 9-4 decision to the St. Anthony Bulldogs. The Eagles were held to five hits in the contest against Tyler Koester and three relievers.

The Bulldogs scored one in the first and added three in the second and two more in the third off Zak Snearley. Snearley pitched six innings allowing 13 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles scored twice in the second to take a 2-1 edge into the bottom half of the inning as A.J. Hyatt drove in a pair of Eagles. However, St. Anthony took the lead for good with a three run second.

Trailing 9-3 going into the seventh, the Eagles plated one, but the rally ended off reliever Ryan Schmidt. Mark Fehrenbacher led the five hit attack going 2 for 4. Connor Walters was 1 for 3 in an RBI. Mark Mammoser belted a double, while A.J. Hyatt drove in two with a single. Fehrenbacher, Walters, Alex Frohning and Jared Woodard scored the Eagle runners. The Eagles were given eight walks by Bulldog pitchers, but were unable to get the clutch hit in scoring situations.

On Tuesday, the Eagles returned home and blanked Lawrenceville 10-0 behind the three hit pitching of Dylan Casey. Casey needed only 65 pitches to post the five-inning victory. Meahwhile, the Eagles drilled loser Drew Kelly for ten hits in three innings and nine runs.

The Eagles scored three times in each of the first three innings to build a 9-0 cushion for Casey who walked one and fanned five Indians. The Eagles finished with eleven hits including homers by Peyton Wyatt and Kelby McCoy. Wyatt and McCoy each had two hits with Wyatt driving in three from his lead off spot and McCoy plating two from his third position in the lineup. Jared Woodard also added two hits with a pair of RBIs. A.J. Hyatt, Scott Jansen, Mark Fehrenbacher, Connor Walters and Mark Mammoser each joined in the fun with a base hit as eight Eagles helped end the contest by the 10 run rule after five innings.

On Thursday, the Eagles improved to 10-7 with a huge victory over visiting Teutopolis 5-3 behind Marc Brandenburg. Brandenburg scattered six hits in going the distance throwing 116 pitches with 73 for strikes.

Clint Lustig started for T-Town lasting 2.2 innings allowing only one hit, but with five walks leading to three Eagle runs.

After T-Town took a 2-0 lead, the Eagles tied it at 2 and took a 3-2 edge into the fourth. Here the Wooden Shoes tied the score at 3. However, the Eagles pushed across the decisive runs in their fourth. Brandenburg settled down and blanked the Wooden Shoes over the final three frames to post the victory.

The senior righthander walked three and fanned six. "Marc was great today. We played great. It was a big win for our program," commented Eagle Coach Jason Fulton.

The Eagles improved to 11-6 with the victory. Peyton Wyatt, Scott Jansen, Mark Fehrenbacher, Mark Mammoser and A.J. Hyatt collected the five Eagle hits.



Eagles split with Salem

In Apollo baseball Saturday, the Eagles divided a doubleheader with the host Salem Wildcats. The Eagles won the opener 6-1 behind Jared Woodard's three hitter. However, the Eagles were not as fortunate in the nightcap as Salem rallied with a six run sixth to post an 8-7 win to gain a split.

Jared Woodard not only pitched a three hitter, but helped himself at the dish with a double and a homer driving in three teammates. Mark Mammoser was also 2 for 4. After Salem scored their only tally in the first, the Eagles broke open the game with three in the fourth and two more in the sixth. An insurance run in the seventh helped seal the victory. Peyton Wyatt, Scott Jansen, Mark Fehrenbacher and Alex Frohning each joined in the eight hit attack off Salem losing pitcher Daniel Childress and Brendon Sharp.

In the second contest, the Eagles raced to a 4-0 lead after an inning and 7-1 after four frames. However, Salem scored once in the fifth and six in the sixth to overcome the Eagles 8-7 highlighted by a three run homer by John Tolliver.

"Dylan Casey pitched well in the second game, but we couldn't hold the lead," said Jason Fulton.

The Eagles collected five hits off John Tolliver and Victor Williams. Connor Walters had a big game for the Eagles going 2 for 4 with a double and a homer driving in five runs. Scott Jansen also doubled, while Peyton Wyatt and Mark Fehrenbacher had the other Eagle hits.

The Eagles are now 2-6 in the Apollo and 12-7 overall as they next meet Apollo foe Robinson on Saturday at Robinson. Robinson won a doubleheader over Olney last Saturday 4-3 and 13-6. Effingham stopped Paris twice 6-3 and 3-1. Mt. Zion swept Charleston 5-1 and 6-4.



Eagles in T-town Invite

The NCHS track girls finished third and the boys fifth in the annual Teutopolis Invitational last Saturday.

T-town won the girls meet with 145 points. Effingham had 138, while Newton scored 115. Charleston had 79, Altamont 38 and Casey-Westfield scored 20.

Charleston won the boys meet with 142 points. T-town had 141, Effingham 114, Casey-Westfield 77, Newton 64, Altamont 13.

The boys won two events as Ross Johnson won the 200 in 23.23 seconds and the 800-relay team of Ridge Finn, Marcus Pilman, Dalton Pickens and Johnson won in 1:36.43 minutes.

For the girls, the 400-relay team of Taylor Rauch, Maura Cummins, Calla Niebrugge and Jackie Michl won first place in 54.88 seconds.

Maura Cummins also won the high jump going 5-6. Tara Wirth was a double winner taking the shot at 30-4 and the discus at 87-2. Sydney May also won the triple jump at 29-1.



Lady Eagles atop Apollo

After a double dip sweep of visiting Salem last Saturday and a Charleston sweep of Mt. Zion, the NCHS Lady Eagles moved into first place in the Apollo by themselves with a 7-1 record.

Amber Shedelbower fired a five hit shutout in the opener. Shedelbower walked none and fanned eight in going the distance. Kimberlin Wallace and Lauren Gray supported Shedelbower with big hits. Wallace was 2 for 3 and Gray drilled a double.

In the nightcap, the Lady Eagles won 7-1 as Shedelbower won again with three innings of shutout ball. Whitney Koebele led the attack with a 3 for 4 appearance at the plate. Brianna Nail tossed four innings allowing five hits.

With the sweep of Salem, the Lady Eagles now 15-4 for the season, have a one game lead in the Apollo with a 7-1 record. Charleston is one game behind at 6-2 and Mt. Zion is two games behind at 5-3, along with Effingham also at 5-3.

Last Saturday, Charleston swept Mt. Zion 7-0 and 4-2. Robinson and Olney split two games by 7-6 scores. Effingham won twice over Paris 8-3 and 25-1.

This week the Lady Eagles will play Teutopolis and then host Robinson on Thursday in a home Apollo twin bill. On Saturday, the Lady Eagles will host their annual Newton Round Robin with Arcola, Oblong and St. Anthony.

Also in non-conference action last week, the Lady Eagles blanked St. Anthony 2-0 behind Amber Shedelbower's four hitter.

Newton collected only four hits with Kimberlin Wallace going 2 for 3 with a double. Mallory Kocher also doubled for Newton in the victory.



Tennis Eagles shut out

In boys' tennis action last week, the Eagles were blanked by St. Anthony 9-0 as the Bulldogs swept all singles and doubles matches.

Caleb Will lost 0-6, 0-6 to Hayden Esker. Jerry Howze lost 0-6, 0-6 to John Kay. Logan Andrews fell 3-6, 2-6 to Aaron Walters. Jesse Renfroe lost 0-6, 0-6 to Thad Fifer. Dakota Birch dropped a 1-6, 0-6 match to Efan Hahman. Eric LeMay fell 0-6, 0-6 to Chris Schultz.

In doubles, Caleb Will and Jerry Howze dropped a 0-6, 3-6 match to Cole Beverman and Coe Buhnekemper. Logan Andrews and Jesse Renfroe fell 0-6, 0-6 to Andrew Stephens and Connor Kabbes. Dakota Birch and Eric LeMay fell 0-6, 1-6 to Lewis Martin and Eric Hoene.

On Tuesday, the Eagles were blanked 5-0 by Teutopolis. Caleb Will fell to Ryan Deters 3-6, 1-6. Jerry Howze fell to Jordan Haskenhern 4-6, 3-6. Logan Andrews also fell in singles play to Trent Gebben 0-6, 0-6.

In doubles, Dakota Birch and Eric LeMay dropped a 0-6, 2-6 match to Michael Brummer and Willie Jansen. Brad Kilgore and Matt Shryock dropped a 0-6, 0-6 match to Jeremy Niebrugge and Russell Higgs. In exhibition play, Matthias Ochs fell to Nick Meinhart 0-6, 0-6.

On Thursday, Robinson shut out the Eagles 5-0 as the Eagles had a tough week. #1 Caleb Will dropped a 0-6, 1-6 decision to Austin Siler. #2 Jerry Howze fell to Devan Dirks 1-6, 0-6. #3 Logan Andrews dropped a 1-6, 1-6 match to Brancton Kurzeja 1-6, 1-6.

In doubles action, #1 Dakota Birch and Eric LeMay fell 1-6, 1-6 to Justin Buchanen and Andrew Card. #2 Matt Shryock and Matthias Ochs fell 1-6, 1-6 to James Fiscus and Josh Avery.

In exhibition play, Brad Kilgore dropped a 1-6, 2-6 match to Ryan Ferguson.
