MACOMB — The Macomb School District and Board of Education are accepting letters of interest to fill a member seat that will soon be vacated once Board of Education Vice President Matt Bierman leaves the district with his family to begin his new job at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington-Normal.
According to Macomb School District Superintendent, the appointee would serve on the board until the April 2019 election.  Bierman was elected to the board April 2011.
An advertisement by the district notes a board member must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 18 years old, be a resident of the district for at least one year prior to appointment, be a registered voter, must not be a school treasurer or trustee; and must not be a child sex offender. Those interested should submit a letter of interest to Board President Jill Myers either at the administrative office, 323 W. Washington St. in Macomb or by email to by May 1.
Twomey said the board will appoint the agreed upon individual to the vacancy. Since the person would be seated in July, Twomey noted it would be ideal for anyone interested to contact Myers and the board as soon as possible so as to become familiarized with the operations of the board and the demands presented by the position.
“We went through a similar process when Jude Kiah left,” Twomey said. “This allowed the board to talk to people. Once they knew Scott Torrance would be on the board, he attended a few meetings.” Twomey also noted new board members must go through “significant mandated training.”
One popular misconception by the public is that those on the board must have children or relatives attending school in the district. Twomey said that is not a requirement.
The Macomb Board of Education typically meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of the month in C.T. Vivian Library in the Macomb Junior-Senior High School, 1525 S. Johnson St. Board of Education committees for Finance and Insurance, Facilities and Transportation, Curriculum and Scholarship, Western Division IASB/JAC Delegate, Policy, Handbook and Strategic Planning.
