To the Editor:
In just a couple of days, it will be September 11th, a date in history that does not bring back good memories. What will you be doing that day? I have an idea that will help make it a day to remember, with good memories.
My wife and I have been involved for several years with Greater Peoria Honor Flight. You may’ve heard of it—you may have even participated in the program. It is a great program that says Thank You to the many Veterans in our area. Several Fulton County Veterans have had the opportunity to fly free, from Greater Peoria Airport to Washington, D.C., to visit the Memorials built in their honor.
You may have also heard of the Spirit of Peoria, a true paddle-wheeler on the Illinois River, based out of Peoria. You may even have enjoyed a cruise on the Spirit in the past.
So what do Greater Peoria Honor Flight and the Spirit of Peoria have to do with September 11th? On Tuesday, September 11th, the Spirit of Peoria will host its 4th Annual Patriot Cruise to benefit Greater Peoria Honor Flight. This is an evening dinner cruise to pay tribute to those who were involved with the tragedies of September 11th, and also to pay tribute to Veterans from all branches of the service that served in any branch of the US Military, any war or conflict. Part of the proceeds from the cruise will be donated to Greater Peoria Honor Flight to allow more Veterans to participate, free of charge.
Several area residents are GPHF Volunteers, several have flown as either a Veteran being honored or as a Guardian for a Veteran. As an area resident, you may be familiar with a GPHF fundraising program titled “Nets for Vets” which occurs in the local schools. The Patriot Cruise is an opportunity for you to enjoy an evening of food and fun, on the Spirit of Peoria, and assist Greater Peoria Honor Flight with their continuing goal of flying Veterans to Washington, D.C. free.
Boarding of the Spirit of Peoria begins at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner. The cruise, complete with live music, dancing, and door prizes, is from 7 to 9 p.m. Among those on board will be several Veterans, many of whom have flown on Honor Flight. Also there will be several GPHF Volunteers, ready to discuss the program with you and help get you involved, should you want to. Plus, there is a lot of great scenery to enjoy while cruising on the IL River.
You can order your tickets online-www.spiritofpeoria.com-or call the Spirit ticket office at 309-637-8000.
