MCLEANSBORO — The CWC Bulldogs dominated the time of possession under cold and rainy conditions and pulled of a 16-6 victory over the Hamilton County Foxes on Friday.

The Bulldogs made their first break on the opening kickoff, as they forced a Hamilton County fumble on the return which was scooped up by Eric Mills, giving CWC possession at the Foxes’ 24-yard line. A few plays later Luke Simon ran it in for a six-yard TD. Simon added a conversion run to put the Bulldogs up 8-0.

The teams traded two quick possessions before Hamilton Co. got it back and was able to break free for their only long play of the game on the Bulldogs’ defense. Matt Gate took a handoff on a sweep, cut up the middle, and outran the CWC defenders for a 53-yard touchdown.

The Bulldogs defense stiffened at that point, with Adam Phelps and Dylan Webb disruptive on the line and Austin Wheeler coming up with a big fourth-down stop.

The Bulldogs were able to pick up a second score late in the second quarter on broken play when quarterback William Pugsley was able to improvise a pitch to Ethan Mahon who took off down the sideline for a 27-yard touchdown. Wheeler added the conversion run to put the Bulldogs up 16-6 on what would be the last score of the game.

The Bulldogs spent the second half grinding out drives, which did not result in scoring plays but took large chunks of time off the clock. Phelps and Wheeler added some valuable runs for first downs that kept the drives going, including one drive that lasted most of the fourth quarter before giving the ball back with only 3:33 left on the clock. The CWC defense held once more and the Bulldogs were able to get on the bus soaking wet, but happy with the victory.

“I was just really happy and proud of our players,” said CWC coach Kurt Simon. We made some big plays when we needed to and hung in there until the end and finished strong.”
