Fans showing up at the Teutopolis soccer field Tuesday afternoon expected the Wooden Shoes and Newton Eagles would produce a very competitive matchup.
But the visitors from Jasper County ran into a buzz saw with the Teutopolis varsity squad winning 6-0. Few expected such a one-sided match and a shutout, too.
The Shoes scored two goals within the first 14 minutes, putting the Eagles in the hole early. Allessio Bucciarelli scored with an assist from Alex Deters to put the first Teutopolis goal on the board less than four minutes into the contest.
About 10 minutes later, Alex Deters scored, making it 2-0 for Teutopolis early in the first half.
Newton could not get on track. The Eagles produced a score into their own goal to make it 3-0 at the 20:23 mark. Less than five minutes later, Noah Hemmen made it 4-0 in favor of the Shoes.
The Shoes were in sync on passing and defensive ball control in the first half. Defense was also strong at the net for Teutopolis. Newton did not help its cause with some scoring attempts going high over the goal.
In the second half, Alex and Derek Deters finished off scoring for the hosts with their goals, chalking up the final score at 6-0. The Shoes then held off any comeback attempt by the Eagles, who have had a very successful season in 2019.
It was win 13 for Teutopolis. They play at Breese Mater Dei on Saturday, Oct. 5. Newton plays at Mattoon on Friday, Oct. 4.
