Local fans of live music will be pleased to learn about Micahlan Boney, an up-and-coming 18-year-old singer/songwriter who plans to visit our area during October 2019, with a free program, open to the public, at the high school auditorium on Monday, October 21 at 7 p.m. Sponsored by Poss Music Works in Effingham, and locally by the Embarras River Tourism Council, she will be visiting various venues in the counties of Effingham, Jasper, Clay and Clark, for a few days each during the month of October, as she is in our area to perform at the Wander Down Music Festival near Makanda, IL from October 18 to 20, and will visit Newton following the festival.
To say Micahlan is multi-talented is an understatement, demonstrating she is skilled at playing several instruments and many different genres of music. She splits her time between living in Georgia and in Nashville, TN, and has played on the road for many live shows and festivals. You can find out more about her here: https://micahlanboney.com/about, and you can follow her on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mikemeeksboney. You can also watch many of her videos on YouTube.
She enjoys entertaining her audience with playing the fiddle, guitar, and singing original songs as well as well-known ones. She enjoys playing the fiddle in non-conventional ways by using looping technology and also by covering artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, and Gloria Gaynor. Her shows are family-friendly and politically-neutral.
In addition to the free evening concert at the high school, Micahlan will also be performing for the student body and sitting in on some classes at the high school and junior high to talk about pursuing a career in singing and songwriting, and answer any questions for interested students. In the classroom, she plans to share her approach to songwriting, how to build self-confidence while performing, affordable and/or free resources for learning music, and explain what being a professional musician entails.
She will play for residents and their families and friends at Villas of Holly Brook on October 23 at 3 p.m.
You can follow the facebook page of Embarras River Tourism Council for updates and more info. Listen to 103.5 WIKK for Bobbie Ashley’s interview with Micahlan, which will air in the next few days on Bobbie’s morning show.
Poss Music Works is trying to expand its mission of bringing culture and art through music to central Illinois by inspiring young people to appreciate music and, hopefully, expand their appreciation of the great traditional American styles of music such as folk, bluegrass, blues, gospel, country and jazz. By bringing in young, talented, aspiring artists to ply their craft and tell their stories in schools and at youth-focused events, we hope to inspire our young population to consider also enriching their own lives by playing and enjoying music. We also plan to provide music to older generations in assisted living and retirement homes, to enrich their lives as well, and when possible, set up public concerts for the general population. Music is the universal language.
