Eureka moves to 5-1, drops EPG to 2-4
A rough season isn’t getting an smoother for El Paso-Gridley. Beset with injuries and other situations, the Titans have not been able to put together a complete since Week 1. This is difficult as in the first place, but when facing an athletic team like Eureka, it’s even harder.
It was evident on Friday as the Hornets stung EPG 35-12 in a Heart of Illinois Conference Large Division contest.
Quarterback Matt Martin got the Hornets (5-1) going with a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs. Cade Gold added the conversion kicks, which he did on all five Eureka TDs. The second Martin score made it 14-0 with 6:56 left in the first half.
Hunter Gladson rushed in from five yards to push the lead to 21-0 by halftime.
Eureka added a touchdown with 1:15 to go in the third and tacked on another with 9:16 left in the game for a 35-0.
El Paso-Gridley avoided the shutout when Kaden Barth scored on an 18-yard strike from Zach Herr with 4:15 to go. Herr and Ryne Faulk connected for a 77-yard score with 2:01 remaining for the final difference.
Faulk rushed for 140 yards on 21 carries for the Titans (2-4). He also had 84 receiving yards. Herr was 9 of 15 throwing for 146 yards and two TDs.
Martin rushed for 108 yards and Gladson added 102 for the Hornets. Martin was 5 of 11 passing for 84 yards and a touchdown.
