Owen Mahaffey finished first but he was not the only Newton Eagle runner arriving early at the finish line during a cross country meet Oct. 22 at Sam Parr State Park.

Mahaffey was followed closely by Eagle runners Nick Zwilling and Luis Zavala, the respective times of the trio were 15 minutes and 43 seconds, 15:45 and 16:32.

The Newton boys mastered their course on a cool fall day that also featured a beautiful background with trees changing colors along the lake. The Eagles did not have enough runners to benefit from their fine runs. Robinson was first, Mount Carmel second and Olney third in team scoring for the meet that drew 32 boys to the course.

Richland County High School's Tatum David was the top runner among girls competing in cross country at Sam Parr State Park. But Newton Lady Eagle runners Abby Stone, Rylea Borgic captured second and third place.

David finished the course in 16:07, almost two minutes ahead of the second-place runner Stone and a little more ahead of Borgic.

Adding to the rush of Eagles were Claire Carr, finishing in 11 place, Taylor Slough, 13, and Lucy Yager in the 14 spot among the field of 29 runners. Eliza Bierman rounded out the Newton runners in 22 place. That helped the Eagles finish second behind Olney, which also had several girls finishing in the top ten.
